Defender VS Rolex watch

In 1982 I graduated high school and my Dad gave me a Rolex watch that I have been wearing ever since.
That is until I got my Defender.

Soon after the Defender arrived something came loose in the watch and I had to get it fixed. First time ever that it had been opened. I figured 29 years of abuse, diving, off road motorbike riding, sleeping and bathing in the watch was pretty dam good, no worries. $450.00 to fix.
3 months later same thing??? Got it fixed again $450.00.
Yesterday, same thing.

Apparently its the vibration on my left hand from the shift lever:doh:

I have a habbit of resting my hand there when I am driving.

So the Rolex will sit in the closet for now and I will get a casio or seiko or something.

Interesting. I have a Rolex Explorer 2 but I dont wear it much, has too much sentimental value to risk damaging it. What exactly was the problem with it? Was it an internal part?

Being a gift from your father, your watch has a story to its history. Worth preserving in my opinion.

Try taking your hand off the gear stick. Then you can enjoy the watch and the Defender.

Internal part, something to do with the winding mechanism.

I will get it fixed again but wont be wearing daily like before.

Make it a Seiko kinetic and it will stay charged for years at that rate

Buy a Land Rover watch ... careful though, they rust!

My daughter noticed the gear lever was 'all blurry' today (she's only 4) she likes it though. I was gonna try to weight it to reduce the vibes a bit but that will have to go on the list

I would not take the 'excuse' of the Rolex dealer that occasionaly resting your hand on a gearstick causes a Rolex to implode..... he is selling you his theory and you bought it. I think its bollocks.....I would get in touch with Rolex HQ and see if they buy into his theory. Surely the finest watch in the world cannot be destroyed by a the occasional resting of ones hand on a gear stick. Get you money back and tell them to do a propper job.

What about all the left handed ****ers in the world.... there wouldn't be many Rolex watches left!

It's the winding post. It shears under repetitive vibration. I did the same to mine riding my off road bike. £450 quid to fix now means a swatch for anything other than lying in bed.
