Afternoon all, can I pick your brains on what this noise maybe please.
It's only happening on the drivers front wheel no noise from the passenger front wheel.
With the landy jacked up when I rotate the wheel backwards and forwards there is a loud clicking noise. Nothing appears to be loose or fouling. There is no play when pushing top or bottom of tyre (as I would normally expect if wheel bearing knackered).
But could it still be the wheel bearing? I don't think it's cv as noise is there in a straight line.
There was a clicking noise whilst driving yesterday but it went away after a minute or so. I also get a lot of vibration when accelerating or under load, saying this as it may or may not be related.
Thanks in advance Daz

Although worn CV joints are more likely to make a noise when the wheels are at an angle, it's possible for them to make a noise in the straight ahead position too. A further source of noise that I've seen is when the bolts holding the disc to the hub either stretch or come loose so It might be worth getting the calliper out of the way and slipping the hub off to check that everything's still firmly attached. Plus, as well as the wheel bearing there's a roller bearing inside the stub axle to guide the driveshaft. In my experience these last quite well, but it's conceivable that this could become noisy, especially if one of the rollers has broken up.

Also in my experience, the biggest source of vibration is worn universal joints on the propshafts. Even a tiny bit of slack can give you a lot of vibration. So if the proshaft joint haven't been replaced for a few years I'd be looking carefully at them.

Thanks for the reply and advice, been back under it today and things have moved on a little. The front prop is new and was put on about a month ago. There is about a 1/4 turn of play on the front prop into the transfer box but none at all on the rear. The clicking noise is still there but more worryingly you can here a rattle in the transfer box when rotating the front wheel.

I'm now thinking the vibration is caused by the transfer box.

I have removed the front prop and driven around this morning in diff lock high. The vibration is exactly the same (maybe even slightly worse). Not sure what this tells me or eliminates if I'm honest.

The front drive train and axle is prolly ok then ...

You know that the rear prop make no grinding to the T/box ...

You could take the rear prop off and see what happens, just to be sure ...

I find with the rear prop play can be hard to detect because of the handbrake. If you wobble it with the handbrake off (making sure the wheels are wedged so it doesn't roll onto you) it's bit easier to detect with the prop in situ.

Cheers that's a useful tip.
