I'm after a bit of advice. My steering wheel, typeB 48 spline. Is in poor shape, the foam around the rim rotates on the steel core..

I intend to replace with a smaller diameter 340mm to gain a little more knee room mainly.

I cant afford a momo brand and ideally want to spend less than £150. But dont want to end up with a flimsy piece of junk either. And as it's not easy at the moment to go shopping to get a feel of a few different ones, I will be buying blind off the internet.

Could anyone recommend a cheaper brand but that is decent quality.

Cheers

I just looked through that link on the bay, and quiet like the idea of the removable 1s as an extra layer of security especially if left in a full lock position.

Don't know anybody that's got 1 though.

The mountney versions are good, on eBay from £50 <https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2544528.m570.l1313&_nkw=defender+steering+wheel&_sacat=0> without a hub to £90 and up with. You can get a hub from about £12 up to £45
I've had one for over 4 years on my Defender and have just bought a new one for my other defender, I would have swapped steeing wheels but one is a 48 aned the other a 36 spline.

I have a spare 48 spline hub if you need one (£35)

I have the mount net steering wheel, while it’s no Momo to feel, it’s better than the original. I would also buy another if this one breaks or ever needs replacing.

Mine is fitted with a removable boss. The boss has been “modified” so you can’t just go fitting another boss from the same manufacturer and driving away with it. It’s left against the steering lock too.

Nice idea, but I'm keen to gain a little more knee room.. I've just placed my order for mountney steering wheel 340mm diameter and boss kit.. as recommended :)

Make sure it’s a slimline boss as it can stick out quite a way. Luckily, the removable one I have is almost exactly the same length as the position of the standard steering wheel, so it doesn’t make a lot of difference to using indicators and wipers.

.. too late now.. o_O

70 quid all in so I guess it's not too expensive an error if I have change to a slimline one if it's a squeeze to fit between the steering wheel and seat

Quick update.. so finally fitted mountney M range steering wheel got off ebay, and taper boss KK810XS. From rimmer brothers.

Turns out mountney dont do a slimline boss so the steering wheel is around 30-40mm closer to you when driving but the smaller diameter makes a massive difference to driving experience. But really does need a slimline kind boss..perhaps a different branded slimline boss may fit the mountney M range wheels.

The steering wheel is nice and rigid and for 38 quid is good value. But given its price is not best quality and comfort but no complaints I was on a budget.

The defender steering shaft has a parallel spline but then the shaft has a taper, the mountney bosses tapered hole could do with being machined a few mm deeper then it would sit deeper onto the splines. I ended up taking a few measurements to satisfy myself that the spline was engaged to its full length. Also you tighten the boss on before you fit steering and gripping the boss by hand whilst tightening bolt is not ideal, unless you can crack walnuts with your fingers.

The roll pins for the boss were missing, these act as indicator cancelling. Luckily found some in my garage.
