My defender steering wheel has lots of play, it turns 20 degree`s each way without any effort at all !! it makes drivng a bit fun. Any ideas ??
 
;) Plenty of tips if you search this forum..;).with mine I started with changing worn UJs in the steering column and then went down to the steering arm Ball Joint...eventually changed all the bushes on the suspension to get as good as new......however you may also have a knackered Steering Box!, but try easy things 1st!:rolleyes:
 
just found my drop arm ball joint is flapping around like a tit in the breeze.. i hope i can change it easily enough! i have heard some horror stories.. :-(
 
ball joints are easily removed by hitting end of arm near were joint goes through it breaks the taper holding it the bigger thehammer the better with in reason ,drop arms can be removed the same way but will obviously reqiure more force ,drop arm ball joint can be done in situ using a bottle jack and suitable bolt etc to push up disc so that circlip can be removed the bearing race can be difficult but can be pulled out through the bottom with suitable bolt and washers ,new one can be tapped into place using suitable socket
 
im going to have to wait till next weekend to tackle mine, the motorway is a scary place at the mo though! doesnt sound too hard.. a week of soaking in free it should hopefully make it all a bit easier!
 
My steering wheel actully turns with almost no effort, wih the engine off before any resistance what so ever !!! going to be a lng week me thinks. Sod the motorway till its fixed.

i just slacken the nut off a bit so like bwt 3-4mm away n go down street hit spped hump a tad fast n nocks it n shocks it but not enuf so you cant get it back to yard to swap it just feels a tad loose but thats how i do them
 
I like that idea :)
I have to bump it up the kerb to get it into the garage anyway.

Probably doesn't appear in the workshop manual but if it saves buying a stupid priced puller or thumping 8 bells out of it might just give it a go.

I bought a 110 last year , it'd spent most of its life on a farm but was cheap, the steering wasn't too bad driving it round the lanes but the 150 mile drive home on the M6 was terrifying :eek:

Mine was the steering box, as soon as it was swapped for one off a disco it was fine, I didn't need to replace anything else
 
i had a good few brown trouser moments in this wind on the motorway today! got my ball joint kit but no time to sort it!
 
i have tried the two hammer, the speed bumps and have twisted hydraulic pullers in the past to get a drop arm off and it still wouldnt budge.

I ended up taking the box out to change the ball joint, even tried when it was out using the two hammer trick but nothing. it is a real bugger changing it in position especially if you have a steering gaurd in the way
 
Tightened up my steering box yesterday, massive difference! Less than half an inch play in either direction at the steering wheel now. Transformed the way it drives :)
