Hi all,

I fitted new rear lights on my defender. Just the bog standard ones from SP4x4 for £2.5 each.

Fitted as per the old wiring, so Red to Red, Black to Black and Green to Green. Also fitted new bulbs with two filaments.

Now both brake lights work when the driving lights off, but when I turn on my driving lights, the left rear light is on full, therefore both filaments are on and its really bright. The right rear light is completely off. When I apply the brakes there is no further light that comes on.

I have checked the wiring and doesn't appear to be chaffing. I will check the right bulb to see if one of the filaments has gone, but that should give issues to the left anyway.

Any ideas what might be the problem?

I had fun and games when I fitted new front side lights and indicators, despite wiring everything up correctly. It turned out to be duff female Lucas connectors which, when replaced, solved the issue.

the left one bulb had gone. So decided to replace the whole unit, as they were getting on a bit. So replaced like for like.

I might change the bulbs again and see what happens

It sounds like it could be an earth issue. Had this issue on my 90 cleaned up the earths at the rear of the lights and all has been good.

With some replacement units/bulbs [cheap] it is possible to fit the bulb in incorrectly and this can result in some funny goings on.
