Hi

I've got a problem with my defender lights it's a 90 on a M plate. I'm not sure what lights should come on but here is what mine do. I move the lever I click and I get the light round side lights and main light on together and I move lever to 2nd position and nothing happens. In both positions I cannot get the lights to work on full beam but if I pull the stalk back like I'm flashing someone the lights come on. So have I got a bad earth or something else?

Cheers for looking steve

Headlamp flash and headlight main/dip are fed from 2 different sources. Have you checked the headlight relay is operating when the headlight switch is turned on? (In the fuse box in front of gear lever) also the dim/dip relay in the same area.

According to the Haynes manual's circuit diagram on the M plate the main/full beam go through fuses 7,8,9,10 but they do this after the switches. The electrical feed for the switching comes from fuse 1 and they are not going through a relay.

If the main/full isn't working but the main/side lights come on in either position 2 or 3 (with 1 as off) it would lead me to think that the switch is faulty, there is a wiring issue (something melted through or worn and shorting) or this is another problem with the Haynes circuit diagram (I have found a few).

my money / first place to look contacts on the switch will be easy to spot will take about 10 minutes with a screw driver to check

Moving 1 click should only give side lights = both side and dipped suggests a short on the switch or a shagged side / dipped switch.

Beam only on when in the beam "flash" suggests a loose electrical link or a shagged stalk switch too. There is a simple cross over arrangement in the pull to flash full beam or push to permanent full beam. If the push to full beam has become loose, then the only way for full would be to "flash".

Ok, There should be potentially a brown (battery not ignition switched) wire to the side & dipped switch on the column. When you turn on the side lights a red wire should take the power to the 2no separate RHS & LHS 5A fuses for the side lights front & rear (from the fuse the cable colours change: RO for RHS RB for LHS).

The second column switch position (dipped lights). Should be a blue wire that heads off to the full beam / flash stalk on the column.

Ahh - do you want me to carry on ???

not the case with the ignition on 1st switch on mine does sides light and main dipped (but very dim) with the ignition off just sides this is how mine behaves also

mine is also a 94m

This is normal behaviour if you have a dim dip relay fitted. This was to prevent driving on just the side marker lights at night. With the ignition on (or engine running) and sidelights on, a reduced voltage will be passed to the dipped beam headlights. Ignition off will be just the side and tail lights as parking lights only.

The main switch should be: back- no lights. middle- side lights (and possibly dim-dip headlights with the engine running) forward- side and headlights on.
