Hi All, Newbie here so be gentle:)

I have a new to me td5 110 Defender and I want to change the oils and fluids. Looking at Haynes, it says I should use Texaco MTF94 for the Gearbox. Is that because Texaco sponser Haynes? I can't find a supplier locally and on line it is a 20litre container which is quite expensive

Can I use another good quality transmission fluid?

Thanks

The  best oil for R380 is Sweco 712 about £72 shipped from Winchester Gears. Genuinely does make a difference to smoothness.

Though any MTF94 is fine as long as its changed every 10k
Probably same stuff with different label.
I first tried the difflock stuff about 15 years ago, totally transformed my td5 380.

I've tried the expensive Difflock stuff and not found it to make a noticeable difference, so I've generally used anything that says MTF94 on the container, and looked for whatever's cheapest. Interestingly, whilst I've had two different R380s of my own and become fairly intimate with a couple more in friends' machines that I help to look after, I've not succeeded in getting the legendary second gear crunch. What could I be doing wrong?

Because whoever owned them before looked after them.
