Hi everyone,

I know this topic has been covered before but the threads are old and things might have changed.

I'm looking for a Land Rover defender 90 for my first car in October and the insurance I have been quoted is around 7k. I have heard of people being quoted £1500 for insurance for a 17 year old on a defender 90 last year.

What are the cheapest models to insure? I have heard its best not to have windows in the side of cab.

Also can you tell me who is cheapest to insure with?

Thanks in advance.

I'm 18 (Parents made me wait until I was 18) and I pay £919 with aviva for my 90. Do a search on here and you'll see how to do it. When I was 17, the quote was around £1300.

The model can make a big difference too. When I was looking for a quote recently for a younger driver it was 50% cheaper for a 300TDi over a TD5 plus as the car gets older the insurance gets cheaper too.

Not quite true, the age doesnt always make it cheaper. Price quite often depends how many of a certain model have been crashed by that age of driver. You pay for other peoples mistakes. Its about time insurance in uk was reviewed as other eu countrys have alot better methods of insuring, for instance, individual drivers get insurance, rather than the vehicle your driving.

Hi,

We insure young drivers on Defenders.

By all means PM me your details and I can arrange for our quotes team to get in touch.

Kind regards,
Jordan

Flux insured me for £1500 ish on my Ninety when I was 18 which was miles better than everyone else. My funniest quote ever was £11k for an old 1.8TD Mondeo.

Thanks everyone ! I'm looking into flux and Aviva rather than using comparison sites. Keep the ideas coming. :)

Even if they never drive it put both your parents on as named drivers and as a rule truck cab and van sided ones are cheaper to insure as they have fewer seats, look at security devices as well

Aviva definitely worth a look if you get a van back defender, cheapest by miles for my 300tdi. I'm 18 by the way.

Just tried Avila online, saying that I had a 90 300tdi 1995 diesal and I named my dad and sister who both have no claims for more than 5 years. I still got 4.5 k for the insurance quote.

think i paid about £120 or £150 this year. hahahaha, suck it younguns!

(i remember forking out £1400 for a 1.4 sr when i was your age.. so it's always been a rip off)

Call them up and speak to them. If no joy with Aviva go straight to Flux and see what they can do. I nearly wet my knicks when I heard my first quote from them.

Have a look at limited milage too unless having a limit doesn't suit your usage. I have 6000 miles a year limit because I only really use it evenings/weekends. It makes a big difference on the price, at least it did when I was 18, I just haven't bothered to remove it from my policy so not sure about now.

I have a 200tdi 90 SW and have been driving it since 17. I am 20 now. Paid into the thousands with Flux for first two years. (first year was over 2500!!!!!!!) but it was the cheapest I could get for a SW. Seems van type landies are alot cheaper to insure. Not expecting it to go down much this time despite being 21 this year.

Pay £750 currently. I have looked into buying a second car ranging anything from a disco 2 to a subaru and they're all £700 insurance quotes.

£900 for my 1990 90 (pre Defender) station wagon, and I'm 18. Anything that was July 1990 onwards, so officially classed as a Defender, tripled the quote. Weird how things work like that!
