Hello there, my name is Aaron. Im 25 years old and I own my 2nd land rover which is a freelander td4 car. (first land rover was a freelander td4 van, very expensive to insure)
I have always wanted my dream car which is a Defender 90 Station wagon in green. In the past I have actually had the money for one but ended up getting a freelander td4 on both occassions where I had gotten cold feet, as in reality i need a good reliable motor to get to work and an 06 plate freelander with less than 60,000 miles on the clock for £7k has been more dependable than a 1990 land rover defender 90 with 150,000 miles on the clock for £7k the same price. so thats why i went for a freelander yet again even on the 2nd attempt.
Its been a while since i bought that freelander and the itch for a defender 90 has caught up with me yet again. I really want one and it is on the list of things to do before I die lol I just need a few tips
I have already looked at research on engines and understand that it is best to avoid the td5 due to their electrical and ecu problems.
so will mainly be looking at the 300 tdi.
I seen one good one going for £10,995 , will this budget buy a good reliable one or do i need to up my budget a bit more?
Obviously i am still stuck with my freelander at the moment and cant do a thing until i sell it (had it up for sale on e bay for 2 weeks now and no one has come forward, grrr very frustrating)
i have considered part exing but garage dealers have made me pathetic offers which I have declined so defo need to sell privately in order to get my asking price.
Rust: I am already aware that I need to check the bulk head, chassis and rear crossmember.
But basically my main concern is reliability: ie that the motor actually starts up in the morning for work and obviously the 2nd is getting me to work.
What are defenders like for starting up reliability? also i am not very mechanically minded and never attempt any repairs on motors.
Off road subject: truth is i dont go off road but still would love a defender 90 but a 4x4 is really handy for when the snow falls and we have had snow in the south east uk for the last 3 or 4 years and thats when i started researching and getting into 4x4s after i crashed my classic rover mini cooper in the snow the first time i had ever drove in it.
Im also aware that the defender will stop being made in 2 years time and the values of these vehicles will most definatley shoot up in price thats why that if i really want one i got to do it before this happens or they will all be out of my price range.
any comments or replies is much appreciated
