If I understand things correctly (and bear with me...new to Defenders...) the original braking setup on the 90/110 was discs front and drums rear - is that correct?

If yes, does anyone know what year the change to all discs happened?

And is it possible to fit later disc rear axle to a 90/110 fitted originally with drums if you also swap other stuff like the load sensor/proportioning valve?

The change over came with the introduction of the 200TDi in 1990 In good order the drum brakes are as good as the later disc set up. Need to know why you want the change and what year/model your truck is.
Thats great to know, thank you.

Re which truck. This is very much TBC as I am on the hunt for a project (if anyone has one...new chassis, that kind of project..) and knowing what to expect when looking at rust/potential is useful.

Are you looking for a SWB or LWB model?
Open mind really. Ideally:

Diesel.
Located south or south west.
Needing chassis and bulkhead.

It will be a forever/keeper vehicle. Something for the grandson and I to work on, passing on some of the skills needed to keep it alive after I'm gone.

Discovery 1 rear axle fitted to a 90 is a common conversion, fits straight on I believe. The same axle will also fit a 110 but it is NOT load rated for a 110. A Salisbury disc braked axle off a later 110 with fit an early drum braked 110 though, I've done that to mine. You can also convert a Salisbury drum braked axle to discs using later parts but keeping the drum braked axle casing and diff.

My TD5 disc braked 90 isn't noticeably better than my son's Ninety with drums on the rear. You just need to adjust the brake shoes every now and again.
I reckon maintenance of drum brakes is one good reason to go for discs. Hence the thinking of looking for a post 1990, or swapping the axle.

It's swings and roundabouts, drums need manual adjustment and changing shoes more of a faff than putting pads in calipers but those calipers are prone to sticking pistons due to corrosion. Anyway you are more likely to find an all disc brake truck as only the first 8 years for Swb or 9 years for Lwb were drum braked.
