With my new chassis I also purchased a plastic fuel tank. It has all the pipework and filler for a TD5 or Puma. Mine is a 200tdi, so it has the filler bolted to the rear tub. The new filler doesn’t have any way of bolting it to the tub, so how is it secured at the filler cap?

Is it worth sticking with the old cap, or is the new style much better?

Hi, Mick, sorry, can't really help with the topic, but may I ask where did You buy that fuel tank? I was searching for one last summer, but couldn't find:|

The filler cap doesn't bolt on in any way, it just pushes into the bodywork. There's a rubber grommet that surrounds the neck and has a groove round the outside for the body panel to go in

So does the rubber grommet hold the filler neck into the panel? Is it secure? It seems strange that the 200tdi is bolted, but this one isn’t?

Yes, I suppose effectively the filler neck is just supported by the rubber grommet. Every time the design engineers revise for the next model they go through it to see what they can do more cheaply, so the filler neck has obviously fallen prey to that process. The rubber grommet seem to hold it there quite well for the lifetime of the vehicle, so maybe they were right.

I suppose it can’t be that bad, otherwise all the Puma/TD5 owners would complain about the filler falling out. Do you know if WLR000020 Grommet is the correct one for the filler?

Yup, I think so. I've never needed to buy a new one, so I can't be 100% sure.
The reason I explored this was because a while ago I fitted an auxiliary fuel tank that goes under the rear wing and gives you an extra 40 litres or so. The standard 90 tank is quite small, particularly for vehicles that are supposed to work in remote rural locations. I was surprised to see the filler neck was held in only by a rubber ring, but it seems to work.

That’s something I will be doing. I get my diesel cheaper than most, but can only fill up during “normal working hours”, so it makes sense to get as much as possible.

Who supplied yours? Mine will be for a 110, so I know it’s slightly different to yours, but did it fit ok? Would you recommend it?

I got a Safari Equip one. I see they're still making them but the prices have gone up considerably since I got mine in 2013. I see the equivalent one offered now is advertised at 30 l rather than the 40 l which was claimed in 2013. There are a lot more options for the 110, including sill tanks, but it all looks a bit pricey! .

I have looked at most of the options, including fitting a larger main tank, and most come back to needing extra plumbing. I’m all for keeping the wiring as standard as possible, apart from a few “tricks” I have. I would rather the wing tank to gravity fill the main. Less to “go wrong” in the long run.

I have found them for around £240, claiming around 40ltr increase in overall capacity. I think that will give around 100-110ltrs total.
