Good evening all

Right so I’ve had a Def 110 1992 since 2005. Just about changed everything over the years including the chassis.
I put it off the road a while back as always wanted it to be more friendly. So I’ve decided to go down the new galv chassis route with M57 engine and 6 speed manual box.
Happy with the engine idea but not so sure on the box. Been doing abit of digging around and I currently have a LT 77 and LT 230 transfer with 1.2 ratio.
Can anyone offer guidance on the box mounts and the gear lever mods - kits.

I’m going to make this an awesome Landy 😉

Have a look on this site mate.. 👍

I’ve already been on this site. One conversion is for an auto box and the other is for the R380. Both of these aren’t any good as I’m keen to fit a 6 speed BMW manual box. Thanks anyway 😊

What question are you actually asking?

The only real viable 6 speed option is the ZF 6 speed manual, found in the Disco 3 and some BMW's such as X5 and 5 Series. You can use a 2wd box and a slightly different adapter or a 4wd box.

So the disco engine bolts straight onto the M57 ?

Would I only require an interface adaptor between the box and transfer box if I used this gearbox ?

Thanks for the help so far guys

Well it all depends what adapter(s0 you go for. There are lots of ways of doing this and no real right or wrong, it will be a modified vehicle. So expect to have to solve some issues and so some R&D yourself.

There are several different types of M57 engine too, which can also impact the decision.

Have a look here, lots of conversion options:

It is certainly an engine worth considering for an engine swap. But I'd guess you'd need to be budgeting around £5000 if you are doing it yourself. And may require buying a BMW donor in order to do the swap. If you are paying someone else expect it to cost 2 or 3 times more.

Thanks for the info. I’ve set a 7k budget with new chassis and I’ll be doing it all myself.
Just looking at what options I have

Thanks buddy, appreciate your input 😊

Does that 7k include the engine swap or just the chassis? With the price of a chassis these days I would be looking at 7k just for the chassis swap by the time you have replaced wiring looms, inevitable repaired/replaced the bulkhead and done all the other bits that you will uncover/might as well do while it is apart. On my last look isn’t a new galv chassis and galv bulkhead about 4.5k? Doesn’t leave much for everything else. Amd never underestimate the price of paint and rust proofing materials. There is Probably about 500 just to paint the chassis and coat inside and out in dinitrol.

My defender is solid. I replaced the bulkhead in 2009 and it was well treated. Only parts I require is the stuff for my conversion. Chassis is a nice to have as my old chassis is still in good condition. So this will be sold. I done a good job on it on 2009 and it has a lot of upgrades including a 2007 back axle. I’ll be also building my own loom and integrating the M57 loom into it once I build a clearer picture and a way ahead. So all good. Thanks for the input, yeah and paint is dear 😊
