Spent a happy hour on Sunday, with my youngest lad helping, fitting the later style radiator hoses to our 1.8 Hippo.

It's run cold ever since we got it, and I was pretty sure it didn't have a thermostat fitted. I suspect this was done to help keep it cool after its head gasket was replaced by the previous owner.

Anyhow, running cold meant it was running on choke the whole time and the heater rarely got above luke warm. Now it warms up nicely, feels smoother, and the heater works! Wahey! Be interesting to see how the mileage improves.

Nice one Ambriel, just let it run for a min or two before driving the kids to school.

Once the temp is up to norm, all should be fine.

Judging by you other thread, how did the coolant escape?

Sometimes the hg can go quickly or over a period of time, look for lumpy idle, usual suspects of oil and coolant levels and contamination.

Keep a weather eye on that temp gauge until all settles down

Yes, have re-filled it and bled through and it seems okay now but....

Had a head gasket go on the V8 once and that was totally classic: mayo in the oil cap, etc.

I think what's happened here is that the engine is over-pressuring the cooling system and the water's being blasted out of the cap.

Is it a new cap? the valve can sometimes stick, they are cheap parts.< £5

Halfrauds (Halfords) sell a slightly beefier one, same thread size, yellow colour
