So, recently, i've been quite bored, and thought i'd plan a new car, insurance + mods for the summer. Being 20, a student, living away from home with only on street parking in a rough bit of plymouth - it's not going to be that great!

However, yesterday, i got a quote for £750 fully comp on a late 90's disco declaring EGR removal, straight through exhaust, viscous fan removal - and replacement with electronic and even the fuel pump tweaks - as far as i'm aware, that's not bad?

Go on today to see if i can improve this is any way possible, it said it was saved, but when i click on it, the lowest i seem to be getting is 1k minimum?

How can this be if they are saved for up to 60 days? and why can't i get the same as yesterday using the exact same information put into it? :confused:
 
Did you get any email with the price and a reference number? If so call their helpline and try and insist on that price.

It is a possibility that they think you are acting in a fraudulent manner, if you saved one quote then started swapping modifications around to try and get a better price that is a good sign for them that someone isn't quite being truthful with the risk and are trying to just get the lowest price possible. Those websites will save all the different versions of risk and modification you have entered and they can call this up again at a later date.

If they think that you are being fraudulent then they will jack up the price or not quote at all.

Hello Keats

Just thought I'd pop on and give a bit of advice on the above.

Online quotations are fine until you mention the vehicle is modified as most insurers on comparison sites arnt geared up to deal with mods. The fact that a company quoted one day and disappeared/upped the rate the next day says to me that they may struggle to quote the mods. Do what AliV suggested and ring the actual insurance company that quoted you the price (this is the point you turn around and say Adrian Flux) :eek: and see if they can quote you over the phone. If the car is modified and you get an online quote, always ring the company that quoted you to check you have the correct cover.

I was quoted £3600 for my Freelander xei 99.
I've got full no claims and have been driving for 25 years.
Tesco quoted less than 10% of that and they don't claim to be a 4x4 specialist insurer

Any insurance provider will have its specialist targets, a Freelander is perhaps classified as not being an actual 4x4 in the same way that a Defender or a Jeep is means that they just price themselves out of the market.

Also bear in mind AF is not an insurance company but a broker, their prices are based upon what their panel of insurers provide.
 
Thanks for the answers guys - i was planning to phone the top 3 companies (elephant, admiral and diamond i think) and see if i could keep getting them to undercut each other to make it even lower.

Need to actually get a landy first though - not keen on the ones that are 180k+miles (although i'm sure they're fine if they have been well maintained) and have been offroaded/modded before. I want to do all the mods myself so that i know everything about it - for when it breaks ;)

Saw (what i thought to be) a good one on autotrader 120k miles, 1998 300tdi manual recent welding and a years MoT for 1200, but it was gone after a whole day! :(

i don't believe that they would give a high quote to price themselves out of insuring my motor, however capable or incapable tratter snobs think it is.
also their underwriters are the same underwriters used by many other companies

Until you actually get a Landy i wouldnt bother wasting yours or their time tryin to get everyone to undercut each other, you have an approx figure that your insurance will be on the vehicle you want with the mods you want, next step is buy one and then try to get them to undercut each other as the price you get today possibly wont be the price you get in a couple of months when you actually purchase the vehicle

The undercutting wasn't intended for just yet, it was as you suggested for when i got one :)

also, if i told them that i had modified the exhaust system, do you think that would cover the EGR removal? technically is the exhaust system - i think? :rolleyes:

This seems unfair when you're getting quotes for different cars and potential mods you want to make - Stupid system really!
