Freelander Td4 2 litre es 3 door 03' Pre Facelift. 98600miles.

Rattle, front far right of driver side dash for about 6 weeks. Bought car eight weeks ago without rattle.

Sounds like a loose washer vibrating, only rattling at 1800-1900revs in all gears. (Turns out with town driving you pretty much end up driving everywhere in that range and hence constant rattle, lol)!

I've had as much of the dash off as I dare (steering wheel, speedometer etc.) but the rattle is still coming from the red area highlighted in the pic.

Weird thing is, it's so much louder when engines cold.. It dies down when warm, but still there.

No garages will look at it for me so I'm trying to fix this myself. Internet not coming up trumps :( Had the driver side door trim off just in case it was that, nothing. Took center console out, nothing. Took handbrake housing off, nothing. Had magnet down front air vents, nothing.

Maybe a crack in the heat shield? Surely I'd need ramps for that job though? Gut feeling tells me this is all coming from dashboard and not exhaust/cat/baffle/heat shield related, but could it be?

PLEASE, is there anyone who's had this issue and knows how to square it away for good?

Cheers :)

p.s - never thought a rattle could be so annoying, I feel like Hook and that damn ticking clock in Peter Pan!

Nooo they don't. I have done loads of rattles on them but never one from there. It may be on the engine side of the bulkhead, take the scuttle panel off at the bottom of the screen and check in there.

Nice one Owl,

Just found a pretty good site detailing the steps for that:

Replacing the scuttle panel - How To. - MG-Rover.org Forums

I love it when there's instructions :) I'll get on it tomorrow in the light of day!

Had a look under the footwell and saw a bulge in the chassis above all the electronics, with a couple of holes in. It's obviously meant to be like that but it sounds as if something is trapped inside it... :S

Cheers matey
