Acquired a discovery 2 two weeks ago and already have to replace the starter motor. Now my lights are doing something strange. Left dipped beam works and the right light is very dim. When I put full beam on the right light works and the left light is dim? I haven’t had a chance to do much other than undo the fuse cover and makes sure all the fuses are in firmly and to be honest my knowledge and experience doesn’t go much beyond this. Google searches are sending me in the direction of the BCU? Has anyone had this experience or know what it could be?

Is yours a pre or post facelift model? Not that it makes a great deal of difference in this case.
With the headlights, there's no need to go anywhere near the BCU, except for some of the little add-on facilities which LR have built into the D2.
The switching for the headlights is done by the stalk on the steering column, nothing more complicated than that.
The first thing you should be looking at is the condition of all the earth connections around the headlights. The next thing to consider is replacing the plastic connectors on the base of the bulbs for ceramic ones. The plastic one can get a bit loose and consequently heat up, causing the plastic to melt and the connection to oxidize resulting in dim lights.
There's also a modification which you should consider. It uses relays to switch the headlights instead of the stalk. The stalk is then just used to switch the various relays. This has the advantage of being able to use a larger gauge wire which therefore provides the full voltage to the bulb filaments.

Brian47 It's 2000 so preface lift, what would cause it to work on full beam and not dipped and then for the passenger side to work in the opposite way?

As I said, it doesn't make much difference, neither have anything other than the stalk switch and fuses in the circuit. Both I and @Beneagles have said, check the earth connections to and around the headlights. The Disco is fairly well known for dodgy earth connections.
Work on one side at a time and don't get caught up in what looks like an apparent fault of one side affecting the other.

OK will do thanks for the advice.
