cutting out freelander when driving

my 99 freelander 1.8 petrol keeps cutting out when driving . After stopping for 30 seconds or so it starts up no prob ,But then after 10 miles or so driving again it cuts out dead whilst driving it . This starting and Cutting out continues and is very dangerouse when driving on motorway .Any help to solve this cutting out problem greatfully apreciated .it seems to cut the engine off, then it starts up again after a short while switched off,thanks for any help.im thinking itsd the ECU or some kind of sensor!what do you think??.cheers

Blimey!!!!!! you're managing to drive a whole ten miles before breaking down, that's one hell of a record for a gaylander.
First of all change the fuel filter.

thanks for that,but can a fuel filter really make the engine keep cutting out? ..how easy/hard is it to change/cheers dave
