I have what sounds like a death rattle coming from right side of engine ( Mk1 2006 TD4 ), thought it was timing chain but after reading forum seems more likely to be crankshaft pulley.
Only really noisy when at idle , as soon as you rev engine noise goes away....or is muffled.
Took wheel and lower cover of wheel arch ( under shield is already removed ) and sound does appear to be coming from vicinity of crankshaft pulley.
Does not appear to be loose or damaged and no shiny bits on pulley or debris/dust nearby.

Any way to check this for definite before I go down the replace pulley route, or could it be something else ?

i had an odd noise from the belt-pulley region for some time
would only occur on idle .. raise the rpm to 1000 .. noise stopped
i figured it may be due to stretched aux belts [ they had done 120k miles ]
belts recently replaced .. noise has vanished ..

It is difficult to diagnose as I have had perfectly robust pulleys that rattle and cannot be seen or any play felt in pulley.
Best bet is to drop the aux belts off and check again, reducing load on pulley can prevent it, but beware as you have also stopped everything else running and they may be to blame - PAS, alternator, water pump etc...
Feel for play in the bottom pulley but as said no play doesn't mean it is ok but play means it has failed !!!
Spin other items by hand and listen plus feel for play - water pump bearings can collapse.
Failing any findings check pulley in dark when spinning, mind your pinkies, and shine a torch on it, flecks of metal will confirm impending failure.

I had a little rattle coming from my R40 tourer same M47 engine recently, mainly on tick over when you have been driving the FL1 and Rover 75 diesel s much as i have you get to know the noise the pulley makes when starting to fail.

Drove fine pulled well and as like you say noise goes when revving or driving the car.

If it turns out to be the pulley only replace it with a Corteco one, after market pullies tend to fail quickly a Corteco is good for 125,000 plus.

can you do a video and post up does it sound anything like this one below.

Gave all the pulleys etc a good wiggle and none of them seemed to have any movement.

Will replace belts and see if its any different before I go for the pulley change.

If anyone has a pulley tool they want to loan/sell/hire it would be appreciated.

Ok I will try to attach video

Most certainly sounds like the pulley, and those belts would not help, change the both, remember only use a Corteco Pulley.

Jus a reminder NOT to be tempted to use an impact gun or wrench on the crank pulley as the crankshaft is made of cast iron and will most likely fracture.

Then you will have crankshaft death rattle which takes a bit more work to replace!!!

cheers for the vid. postings
it confirms the noise on mine were not the crank-pulley
[ mine were more of a high-pitched almost-whistling sound ]

hope yer efforts go easy .. 'n sort the issue out

Just an update.....

All seemed fine after the belts were changed although still the odd rattle.....and then on Tuesday.....

Heard a loud bang as though something on the road had been flung up from the front right wheel into the engine bay.
Noticed the battery warning light come on and as I decided to stop and as I rolled off a slip road ( which luckily was a few hundred yards away) noticed no power steering.
I thought the aux belt had gone....then seen the temp gauge swing straight up past high and steam come out of the bonnet.

On inspection the belt looked ok, but further investigation with a torch and I could see the crank pulley at a very odd angle.
Got recovery to take me back home and will be looking at in in more detail, hopefully to change pully this weekend.
Hopefully no other damage has occurred. :(

So yeah, as was said above.....when it starts making a noise get it changed.

Not seen one collapse!

Can you fit a bar in the castle shaped portion that touches the ground. Jam it with a bit of wood against the chassis rail and then undo the bolt? It is mega tight as no keyway fitted. Don't use an impact wrench as you'll break the crankshaft.
