hi all just a quick question is it better to change the whole lot i,e valve and filter or is it ok just to change the filter .cheers all

If you don't know if /when it's been changed then change the whole unit.
Next time you could get away with just changing the filter if you want.

Yes, valves can get sticky. At the very least every second change, though for the little to be saved it really isn't worth it.

cheers chaps allways change the breather every 12000 just wonderd if i could get away with just the filter now i no thanks again:D

Best to replace the whole lot with the centrfugal separator as now used by BMW. This will not get blocked as does the "filter". Unfortunately BMW do not sell just the plastic centrifuge, you have to buy the whole lot, £37 when I last changed mine, but you do get new gaskets and nuts.

cheers vic but wot the fu#k is a centrfugal wotsit:confused:

It does away with the filter so no more maintenance except a clean every 25k miles, the BMW unit is part number BC10 32J1A (I think!).

Suggest you change the air filter while you have the covers off.

The following is a posting from Nitropaul on a similar thread, sounds useful:

Here is an update to get the BMW crankcase oil seperator slightly cheaper. Now the part number that has been quoted at the beginning of the post is for the whole assembly and when i checked with my local BMW garage, they wanted about £50 for it. I have found that you can get hold of just the oil seperator part (which replaces the mesh filter in the TD4 engine) seperatly at £20.59 inc VAT.

The part number if you are interested is B11.12.7.799.367

I purchased one this week and it went in like a dream on my 2001 TD4. absolutely no modifications required.

Hope this helps to keep money in your pockets and out of the garages.'

To MHM
I dont think you will be able to fit it to a KV6 as it bolts down to a special face on the cylinder head which ports to allow breathing and oilflow back to the sump.

The top of the valve, the round bit with the breather hole in it, is a doddle to remove.
Carefully prize the plastic spring clips to release it.
Inside there is only a spring and a diaphragm.
Check for the valve seat cutting into the diaphragm (turn it over if worn), clean and reassemble.
The top only fits one way due to location of the clips.
I changed the whole valve on mine for the first time at 98k and the inside was surprisingly clean considering the state of the filter.
