After owning my first car (g REG 90) for a few days i noticed it was constantly reading overheating, after reading up on it and completley flushing the coolant system + changing the thermostat to no avail, we decided it was the temp sender... took it into a local landy mechanic just to be doubly sure, where he discovered that the crank pulley could be rotated slightly by hand. He said the crankshaft was worn down and that i needed to replace the engine (and kindly offered to do it for £1000... yeh, right !) he said the woodruff key had worn right down aswell, is this repairable, or do i need to invest in a new engine? :(

I know a chap local to me (KA30 8BG) selling a 19J for £100.
Hope this gives you an idea of price, you could swap the engine yourself or with some assitance. I would think a full weekend should see it done.

You might be able to use a new key packed out with chemical metal. Unless you are experienced(and you dont sound it), get someone trustworthy to check it out hands on.I doubt you need a new engine ther are a few things you could do, and as stated there are engines available well under £1000 fitted.
