All.
my 1990 200tdi 90 has gained a whinning noise from either the transfer box or the gearbox, when the clutch is depressed the noise goes away....any ideas what this may be. Also i have a lighting issue....when i press the footbrake the side lights come on......any ideas on what the problem here could be.......Cheers.

Cheers...suspected a earth leak somewere with the lights but after cleaning up the earth points and swapping out some old bullet connectors the issue still remains......is replacing the clutch release bearing a major job?

Yes and no. You will either have to remove your engine or remove the gearbox in order to gain access to the release bearing, it sits on the gearbox side of the clutch. As for swapping it, well that's a piece of ****. it just pulls right off. The thing is held onto the clutch fork with all of two little clips and one retaining spring clip like thing. You might as well drop a TDi in (if you haven't got one) at the same time and change the clutch if you're doing it!

It does sound like the clutch release bearing / does it shut up when you lightly press the clutch ( so you can feel pressure under the peddle ) ?? .

Does you side lights still come on with both rear bulbs removed ?? ( Ive had the stop filament touching the side light filament in the past ) , also does stop and side lights dull down when the brake is pressed ?
If yes to the dulling of light its a bad earth - if not look for touching / chaffed through wires .

Pos.....****e, that sounds major. is it a case of do it right away or it will cause untold damage if left for a while or a case of putting up with until funds are available.
sypher.....thanks for the pointers, i'll check them out at the weekend,
Thanks.

I'm doing the ignore it till i can afford it route at present and that has lasted since November, was going to do it this month till the rear wheel bearing exploded and ended up rebuilding the rear axle.
