Hi there,

Im pretty new to all things land rover was was after some advice........

the land rover me and my dad bought is a c-reg 90, but has since been fitted with a 200tdi engine and had others bits and pieces done to it. having tidyed it up a bit and fitting a steering guard etc (after i broke the steering box on the first greenlaning trip) we have got round to doin some checks on the engine. the bloke who owned it before us had not fitted a thermostat, which we thought was a bit odd, so we fitted one.... only now its running preety hot (the last notch before the thick white line to the hot on the temp guage)

as far as i know this means that either the engine is running hot and needs cooling or the thermostat is reading too hot and the engine is ok.

if the engine needs cooling then we would need an electric cooling fan as the viscous fan is about a foot from the radiator. the radiator looks ok, a few knackered fins but seems ok.

what i was wondering was is there an alternitive to kenlowe fans as tjey are quite expensive. we were goin to go to a breakers yard and get one off another vehicle, and was wondering if anyone knew of a good match.

cheers for reading, and thanks for any help.

bit difficult to say without knowing what rad is in the 90. why not leave the stat out during the summer?
make sure the rad is clean, inside and out.
flushing the engine out may poss help too?
almost any lecky fan will do the job. seem to vaguely remember a 16 inch one is best. take a tape measure to the scrappy. remember to fit the fan the same way as original. ie pull or push.
another possability is to move the rad nearer to the engine?

I thought about fitting an electric fan but the general thoughts among the landrover gurus in this neck of the woods is they are not worth the bother. Partly for the over heating possibility and resulting damage. And partly 'cos they are a fashion accessory.

Any how if you decide to go ahead try

I reckon that part of the casting that the top hose goes to is begging for machining out to fit a thermostatic switch.

I'll look for the proper adress and post it if I find it.

Land rovers cooling is over engineered. They are over cooled, viscous fans are a waste a lot of the time, I have twin Sabb fans in mine, and they almost never come on, they are connected to a very effective thermostat which is a non stock part. I get cooling for my engine when I need it, and it comes on very rarly.

Td5 Has both types. So..... even LR can't make their minds up!:D

Perhaps worth checking the part numbers of temp sender, guage, radiator for tdi 200 vs original engine. Maybe they are different and the previous owner has cobbled dogs putting it back together.:(

Even though the thermostat is new check it in boiling water just to be sure that it's operating - sometimes these things are faulty.

Personally I'd stick to the viscous fan as when they go wrong they sieze on - at least you'll get too much cooling rather than none.

Is the fan cowl fitted to your radiator? This helps the fan to be more effective.

in normal driving in the uk, you almost never need a cooling fan of any sort. traffic jams are a problem true.
and any off road work will certainly require one.
i prefer the electric type. but i always keep a wary eye on the temp guage.
