Hello….

Just wondering if anyone could help be out with a small problem I have with my 300 tdi discovery?

On my way to pick my daughter up I noticed the heater was blowing cold air with the temp gauge at normal running temp.
When I got home I decided to bleed the system.

I took the top off the header tank then the bleed nut on top of the radiator, after 30 seconds I was getting a nice flow with no bubble so put the bleed nut back.
I then moved on to the other bleed nut, loads of air and it took a good 5mins and a lot of water before I could put the bleed nut back.
Still blowing cold air at running temp.

I then take off the left hand side water pipe that goes into the bulk head, no water coming out at all, after 5mins at 3000 revs and a lot of spluttering from the water pipe I finally get a good flow of water so put the pipe back on.

Then I have to drive to leeds {no choice} on my way home the temp gos into the red without any warning {still blowing cold air}.

I decide to phone the AA because i`m a good way from home and was thinking along the lines of damage limitation.

AA came out and did:
Pressure test {engine off} passed with flying colours
Pressure test {engine running} pressure built up to 15psi but no temp increase.
Sniffer test, passed with flying colours…so head gasket is ok.

Hot water is going all around the engine except for the right hand pipe that goes into the bulk head….its cold with no water
And I did notice the water pump squealing quite a bit .

AA verdict was not sure but should be ok to drive home…..

Any ideas?

Thankyou

Shaun

Thanks for he reply James..

Is this an easy fix or will it have to go into a garage?

Thankyou

Shaun

I would follow the Haynes manual guide for drain/refilling/washing the system out, could be a cloged pipe. Give it a good flush out then, get some coolant/water mix in there.

The are two pipes going to the matrinx, one in and one out. as you did with the other pipes open the ends up to let the air out till you get water through. I don't know which is which but you will need to open the out one to get the water through.

If it is not this then wither there is a blockage or a valve somewhere that is not working.

Good luck.

reads deffo like a matrix fault, hence the overheat and cold heater. flush the matrix as james suggests if nowt comes out then its blocked, remove it and put some mr.muscle sink and drain unblocker in it, follow the instructions and it should clear whatever gunge is blocking it, don't forget to give it a bloody good rinse afterwards ;)

sure seems like a heater matrix blocked. reverse flush it, with 2 hose pipes. 1 in and 1 out, to a drain.

Yep it's the matrix for sure, had exactly the same issue with mine, turned out the matrix was all glogged up with nowhere to go!!

One landrover franchaise dealer quoted me for a new matrix and bits and pieces when I asked them to check it!! (should have known, these screwed me before):(

I took it to a local 'the boys from the black stuff' garage, found and cured within a couple of hours. :D

sorry for not updating the results on this thread, i`ve been that busy with work over the last 3 or 4 months{and forgot about it}....plus it always handy to know what its was for refrence....

I dont have the 300tdi anymore {wish i had}...this problem turned out to be the water pump.....the fins had corroded{spelling}.
must have been running for along time without antifreez / coolent in the water.
