cooling system problems td5

I have recently bought myself a 98 discovery TD5 and discovered it had an overheating problem, on further inspection I found the rad and thermostat were both shot. I have replaced both and now she does not overheat but now when i drive the water in the header tank disappears and I keep thinking it needs more water but when I remove the filler cap the water bubbles back up into the tank to the correct level, I have bled and bled the cooling system but the problem keeps happening, also my heaters get nice and hot but when I stop for a short period ie traffic lights they go cold until I drive off again. have I bought a pup of a landy and should run her until she dies or is it worth fixing?

any tips or advice frustrated discoveryedd?

obviously has an air lock have you removed the bleed plug on the pump/thermostat housing.

Yes I have bled the system until I am blue in the face and she fine for a couple of days and then it starts all over again, I'm at a loss

park the Disco up with the front higher than the rear,that way when you bleed the system,the trapped air will move to the highest point,ie the header tank.Not sure on the Disco,but make sure the heater is set to hot as well.

Td5 disappearing water and constantly topping up suggests head gasket or worse

Check the expansion tank cap is not leaking before assuming the worst. I had to loosen one of the heater matrix hoses with the engine running on my Defender to get it to bleed properly as the heater matrix is a tad higher than the expansion tank. A bit like bleeding a domestic radiator just tighten the clamp when all the air is out. You only loose a small amount of coolant but it does work.

did you lift the tank above the bleed hole while filling the system?... if not you'll not be able to bleed it well whatsoever as the coolant's level in the tank is below the bleed hole and it's a classic case of communicating vessels... put a new tank cap and tighten it well cos you can't rule it out other way, if the pressure valve doesnt work well to keep exactly 1.4 bar in the system or if there's a pressure leak through the o-rings it can cause such symptoms, after these things are ruled out and still no joy you can think to the worst

looks like im gonna have to strip the head and get a gasket set wheres the best place to get one from also whats to look out for and also i cant get my RAVE to work
