Hi all, well I still cant find my water leak although ive seen coolant on the sump. Now ive gone and bought some uv dye. My question is if ive got a slipped liner would the dye mark the spark plugs and show up on them don't think the liner is slipped but im checking everything I can while im under the bonnet. oh its a 2001 4.0 thor. Cheers guys

No need for dye to check for leak into cylinders. Just remove the plugs cylinder with a leak will have a clean plug.

cheers wammers im suspecting its the valley gasket but want to make sure on everything not wanting to spend a load of money on parts to find out it was something stupid its only loosing about 200ml in a week and a half but that's 200ml too much for me. sometimes wish id bought a diesel as I can get really cheap diesel.

Can't see you have a problem with leak into cylinder from what you have said. If you did and coolant was getting into a cylinder, where coolant can go one way, combustion gas can certainly go the other. You would be getting an over pressurised cooling system. Find someone with a static test rig then you need a lamp and mirror to check for leaks with system pumped up.

going to clean the old oil and crap off the sump and surrounding areas. system is only pressurised when it is hot when its cold there isn't any pressure at all. Do most garages have a static rig wammers.

iv been chasing leaks for weeks using uv dye its great stuff.

if its on your sump try tracing it upwards the uv light that comes with the dye will show it up no problem.

i seem to have porous hoses

Well its either use the dye or replace every single component on the cooling system which works out rather expensive not just for the parts but more like the shopping trip to meadowhall for my wife so I could get away with spending that much money on my car:D

The other thing I noticed yesterday was the bottom of the rad and the pipe from the thermostat to the rad were cold the top of the rad and all the other pipes were nice and hot

yeah going to put a new rad on it wammers cos it isn't right just found coolant on the side of the centre console as well looks like its o rings time

well ive had the dye in the coolant and found my leak its coming from the left bank front cylinder head gasket. while im doing the head gaskets is there anything else I should consider doing while im in there?

Well unless its overheating then that's normal on the v8 due to the bypass octopus crap thing. If it starts to get hot the stat opens then water fill flow allowing the bottom of the rad to get hot daft I know but that's how it works on the v8.

A common mod is to drill a 3mm hole in the stat to allow a small amount of cooling /flow all the time not a bad thing and also helps with air locks.
