We were considering either a Nissan Pathfinder or Toyota 4Runner, '97
or newer. I'm ruling out the Pathfinder because I don't like the idea
of filling up with Premium for the next several years.

I've heard that 4Runners will go 200,000 miles easily with regular
maintenance. I'm considering buying one with 70,000 + miles on it
presuming I find a clean one. I plan to have the car inspected by my
mechanic prior to purchasing. Anyone have any personal experience or
warnings about this?

Thanks

Make sure the mechanic is familiar with the vehicle. If the
dealers in your area are any good, they may be the best
place, although a bit slower and more expensive.

With few exceptions, any vehicle can go 200K with regular
maintenance. On a 4wd this regular maintenance will be a
bit more expensive.

Unless your area is unusual, you'll pay extra for a 4Runner,
on the left coast they seem to be the most expensive of the
mid-size SUV's even among ones slightly higher when new.
