I have looked on the LR site and downloaded the spec on all the FL models. But I cannot find out if the 2010 model has the hi/lo gearbox, or has the low box been dropped. Any one know, otherwise it looks like a call to the friendly LR dealer.

I have no idea, but I had presumed it was a similar set up to the fl1.Permanent 4wd with the drive going to the front wheels unless it gets better traction on another wheel.
I wunt know.

freelander 2 doesn't have high / low box, neither did freelander 1. freelander 2 has a haldex clutch arrangement for 4wd / 2wd, freelander 1 had the superbly engineered viscous coupling arrangement.

Spot on with the info, thanks.

Emailed my local dealer and told him I would probably pull the clutch out of any 4 x 4 that did not have a low ratio box. When we were building high seats for stalking, it means dragging a trailor full of "stuff" deep into woodland, a low box is ideal for this.

Quite surprised that the Freelander gets such a good write up for its off road capabilities, I would have thought that a "low" box was a mandatory thing to have for "real" off roading.

Am I right in thinking the FL is a soft roader more than an off roader.

Freelander is never going to be a Defender - but it will get you a lot further than the opposition.
Been across the Sahara in our last one, didn't need low box even though the Defenders were in low second - just left it in 1st on tickover and let the torque converter do its job.

Climbing hills FULLY laden wasn't a problem.

wading is fine, right up until you hit the submerged rock!
Just make sure it's an auto.
