Ho hum, just had a Cobra immobiliser/alarm fitted on my Shogun and
unfortunately, the installer is a friend, did the job as a foreigner, and
has gone on holiday today meaning I can't ask him questions for a week now
that I'm (doh) confused.

Has anybody else got one of these? According to the keyfob it's model 7777.
What I've been told is:

1) When I leave the vehicle, I press the large button on the fob and it
locks all the doors (this appears to work) and the alarm is set.
2) The small button is a panic button.
3) When I return to the car, I press the large button again, unlocking all
the doors, and I will notice the red light flashing on the dash. I touch
the metal contact beneath it with the 'contact key' and that disables the
immobiliser.

My problem is, the red light isn't flashing when I get back in so presumably
it was never immobilised? I notice that the contact key toggles the red
light on and off, so I wonder whether I'm supposed to touch that (enabling
the red light and thus, the immobiliser) before leaving the vehicle (and
*then* proceeding to step one - above)??

Oh erm....forget this. It seems the unit is faulty. Sometimes it
immobilises, sometimes it doesn't. Easily rectified until I can get it
repaired/replaced though. Keep pressing the button and eventually it works
as it should. :)

Pressing the large button will lock, immobilise and alarm the car. The
red light should start flashing a short while after you press the large
button. Pressing the large button when you return to the car will
unlock, turn off the immobiliser and turn off the alarm.
You should never need to to use the contact key, the only reason this is
provided is for when the battery in the fob runs out and you would be
stranded without the key to switch of the alarm.

If you leave the car for a few minutes without setting the alarm, it
should auto-immobilise. The red light will start to flash but neither
the siren or door locks will activate, pressing the large button when
the car is in this state will only deactivate the immobiliser.

Sounds a bit pants. My (non-Cobra) system sets the immobiliser & alarm
from the keyfob when I lock it and disarms it when I re-open it. If I
leave it a few minutes without putting the ignition key back in it'll
re-arm the immobiliser.

I'd check what the LED's doing a minute or two after you've locked it -
I can't see any value in having a plip but still having to manually deal
with the immobiliser.

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

They're supposed to be rather good and it's significantly reduced my
insurance premium because it's on the underwriter's list of 'Cat 1 security
devices'. I think I've just misunderstood how it works, although the unit
does appear to be faulty anyway. That's easily rectified at no extra cost
to myself (despite it being a 'foreigner', it's fully guaranteed). :)

What you and Trooper said about using the keyfob alone to lock/arm and
disarm - does seem to apply in this case, because when it *does* work
properly, the red light does flash when armed (keyfob press), and turns off
when disarmed (keyfob press). No contact/dash key required.

It just seems that sometimes, the immobiliser isn't arming when the keyfob
is pressed, but I have to wait a few minutes for it to automatically arm
itself. That's what confused me and left me wondering whether I understood
how to use it properly.

Anyway, many thanks to both of you. I know how it's *supposed* to work now
and I'm sure I've figured out the main problem (faulty unit).
