Clutch Slave Cylinder Push Rod Retainer

Hi, I have a 1984 110 2/14 petrol Landrover and have just changed the clutch slave cylinder.......on removing the old one I made the mistake of pulling out the rod from the bellhousing (pulling out the plastic retaining clip)........I tried to fit this clip on refitting the new slave cylinder but gave up on it.....

My question is whether the clip just aids fitting or is it there to ensure that the rod does not dislodge during use?

Everything is working fine but did not want to mis-trust the working of the clutch..
