clutch problem

Hi all

I've got a TD5 Disco that has developed a bit of a problem. I've come up to see some friends in Scotland this weekend and the car when running at motorway speed has no resistance on the clutch pedal (I'm assuming I've got a leak somewhere). I do get full resistance back once I slow back down to 30 ish for coming off and roundabouts etc.

Anyone able to tell me what I can do to get the car home on Sunday when I can do some proper investigation.

I think I just need to buy some hydraulic oil but dont know where to put it?

strange concept that, no clutch at speed when not needed, but clutch when you do..

suggest you look under bonnet for fluid resovour .......

make sure you use correct rated (Dot type) to top up..
other than that I donno.......sorry

Any idea which reservoir?

Look under bonnet in back corner in front of driver. There will be two reservoirs, the one nearest the centre of the car is the clutch reservoir. The other one with a big black circular "can" in front of it is the brake reservoir. Fill the clutch reservoir to level with dot4 brake fluid.

what he sez, but if any or both are below there marked full mark, top them up would be a good idea,
while your at it, check all your fluid levels on a cool engine,
oil, power steering, and rad/coolant fuild.



sorry mate, but if you dont know a cats ass from its nose, you really need a handbook to tell you the most basic of things under the bonnet..

its the same reservoir as brakes

Sorry James, bow to your greater knowledge. Mine is based on defenders, reservoir will still be in back corner of engine bay for not too technical types.

If you have to top up take care not to spill any....strips paint!

Thanks for the feedback. Didn't realise that the breaks and clutch shared the same reservoir. I'll get it topped up to get home then can play hunt the leak.

Ok the reservoir is full so now I'm stumped? clutch master cylinder perhaps?

get some one to pump the pedal slowly and see if fluid splashes back in the reservoir its often a sign of poor m/c seals

For anyone that might be interested, it was the slave cylinder that was sucking in air.

New cylinder fitted and working good as new. I've been advised to change the master cylinder as well though so thats the next task.
