Clutch issue Series II petrol

I'm new to the forum so please be kind! New to forum but not new to Land Rovers. I've had them for years starting with Series 1, with 90's, Lightweight, Range Rover and a couple of Discovery's. I am the current custodian of my brothers SII while he's in Germany.

She has a charmed life in my garage used infrequently. However, the last few times I've started her i can't get into gear. I have to start in gear and drive for a couple of miles before the clutch works. The first time this happened, I found out the fluid was almost empty, topped it up and all OK. Plenty fluid now and the pedal feels OK. Bite point is high though.

Do you think it needs a new clutch, or could it need bleeding?

Also, does anyone know a Land Rover friiendly MOT place near Malmesbury in Wiltshire?

have you adjusted the rod within the master ?

Bleed it, and then USE it.

You may have a rusty flywheel and pressure plate.

Do two brisk starts in SECOND gear, which will polish the surfaces nicely.

But your real clue is the low fluid. There may still be a blob of air in there somewhere. Makes sure that the slave cylinder is fitted with the inlet pipe LOWER than the bleed nipple. I saome models these can be fitted upside down with the result that full air-removal is all but impossible.

Top up the master cylinder, and open the slave bleed nipple a little, and just let some fluid escape naturally. Try running about half a reservoir worth of fluid out, without pumping the pedal. Usually does the trick.

Thanks, I'll have a go bleeding it myself this weekend. Not much of a mechanic though.

If you let them stand for a few months they have a habit of the clutch plate sticking.
So it will never disengage to allow you to select a gear.
To fix this:
1. Jack both rear wheels off the ground (make sure your not in 4x4)
2. Chock the front wheels
3. Put her in to 1st an hand beak off
4. Start the engine Let her warm up.
5. Rev her to say 20 mph
6. Push the clutch pedal to the floor and stamp on the breaks.
7. repeat 6 until the clutch works (note their may be a bang when the plate frees off.)
8. once free take her for a drive and slip the clutch a few times.
