Started looking at getting the engine back in my 1979 S3, and was going to do a few preventative maintenance jobs on it while it was out. But, as ever, it's not looking to be quite as straightforward as I had expected.

Apparently, the engine was changed by a previous owner, and while it's still a 2.25l petrol, I understand I now have a 5 bearing engine. The engine number looks to be 11H02048C. A number format that doesn't seem to be consistent with the 1979 era...which I guess it wouldn't necessarily be.

Changing the clutch - was surprised to find I've got M8 metric bolts holding the clutch cover in place. And seemingly a mix of 8.8 and 12.9 steel bolts and different lengths (most 20mm, one longer). So I'm going to fit a new set. Are 8.8 steel adequate for this, or should I be trying to find 12.9 bolts? Not many of the latter on ebay (unless I want to fit cap heads),...

And then the water pump. I got an overhaul kit before I learnt the engine had been swapped. I removed the bolts, tore the gasket in removing it, and them realised the new gasket has 9 holes, whereas the old one only had 7. I've found references to 8 and 9 stud pumps, but no mention of a 7 stud pump. I've got 4 long bolts and 3 short ones - again, all M8.

I may have just found the solution here, actually. https://bearmach.com/water-pump-gasket-542218 looks like it might be the one, which states it's for a military 2.25l engine. That might explain a lot...

Are the spindles, impeller, etc, likely to be the same between civi and military models, or do I need a completely different overhaul kit for my pump?

Cheers,
Adam

IIRC you have a 5MB 2.5 engine from an early 90/110. It should be all metric...
Engine list here:

Useful, indeed!

Looking over images of possible gaskets, I did find 7 hold versions listed for 90/110, but they seemed to be for the 200TDI variant (which I knew I clearly didn't have!) so I'd dismissed them. Hence why I figured the military option might be more likely.

Bearmach have both 90/110 and military gaskets listed, so I've ordered both and will see which one fits best. If the other kit items will fit (and yes, it is a cast iron housing), then I should be good to go. :)

Thanks, everyone. I'm kind of wondering how I got this far without realising the engine was metric!

Any opinion on the grade of bolts I should be using for the clutch cover? I'm tempted to just go with 8.8, unless someone tells, me I really should use 12.9 cap heads, instead. 6 off M8 bolts (plus three dowels) does seem a little weedy given the load they might be under. But then it is all in shear.
