Clunking noise when depressing the clutch

I recently noticed a clunking noise coming from the rear of my TD4 when I depress the clutch. It now seems to have got worse with the clunks becoming more frequent and louder. I also noticed today that when I depressed the clutch there was a bang from somewhere in the engine bay. I have had a look underneath and there appears to be no leaks etc. There is also a whining noise when I am doing between 30-35mph but disappears at 40mph only to return at 50mph especially when free-wheeling.

Any ideas would be appreciated as to the possible causes. My credit card is on stand by.

difficult to say from your discription, but if i were you, i would check out the rear diff mountings , these are a usual problem with clunking noises from the rear, and not expensive to replace (£15) from dealer

Here's my traditional picture, so you can fid them easily. The rubber mounting inside often deteriorates with use - Got 60,000 miles out of the last one.

If it is the front mounting for the diff. you can replace it without removing the prop. shaft if you remove the center bolts of the rear ones and push the diff. over to get the front mounting out.

Have the same noise - this is my first post so Hi there by the way.

Problems with clutch started with this famous clunking noise then experienced difficulty getting the car into gear and suddenly the clutch pedal stays on the floor - but strangely it does go into gear. Any diagnostics would be gratefully received.

teedee, I would have a look at replacing the clutch master cylinder especially if the clutch pedal stays down on the floor. I hope this may be of some help to you.

I wish to begin by thanking ALan and this forum for the help received. Alan you were indeed right and a replacement part Clutch/Master Slave assembly was required price 53.00 (inc VAT from Brit Parts-Stevenage). Now get this, the new unit was fitted using the plastic C clip and assembly and immediately failed at the plastic fitting. This caused my mechanic such exasperation that he machined a new sleeve with bolt fixings to retain the hydraulic element in a secure and safe immovable metal fitting.

Fantastic I now have a reliable unit which can't move in any direction due to the quite ridiculous plastic fitting.
