I'm planning on cleaning out the intercooler on my 06 Freelander 1 Td4. Quite a large amount of goop inside. I've read all kinds of horrors on Facebook about putting petrol through, is there a touch safer way of doing it ? I'm thinking after how badly the previous owner treated the car (They seemed to be in the belief that Landrovers don't need servicing ever) I might bin the stock intercooler, replacing it with something better or just clean it out.

We used petrol on a TD4 cooler with no problems. A thick rubber glove on each end after putting in about a pint of petrol, and lots of shaking it around. Then drained it & did it again. Finally left it upright in the sunshine to dry out before re-fitting.

On daughter in-law's BMW 120D we use DPF cleaner on the exhaust box (looked like a cat so not sure if it was a dpf), and that worked just as well. We even washed that out with a hose & dried it out. No problems after.

Remember it's not a 10min job if you do it properly.

What a faff getting the bumper off! Typical being an end of line car I found more bolts than either the Green, Blue Haynes or the LR workshop manual suggested.

Tomorrow I will be removing the intercooler (Got side tracked by a leaking caliper that had been rebuilt three times)

While investigating the intercooler I've found my AC rad is punctured. Having a decision whether to remove the AC Rad then the water red to clean up the oil from the slight (understatement) oil leak.

Otherwise I'm happy. Oh my husband snapped the bumper so he's in bad books and sleeping on the sofa.
