Afternoon, im trying to help a friend with a problem with his freelander , recently theres a banging coming from the front when driving in a straight line , I havent heard it myself however he said that it sound like metal on metal , I crawled underneath to the roll bar area whilst he rocked it and and there wasnt a sound ( whilst level), I did suspect the rubber bushes , however the bar was solid . Now when we put the one side on the kerb and rocked it there was a definate "clank" and when holding the roll bar it was as if someone was hitting it with a hammer and I was feeling the vibration , new drop links both sides that are still intact.
We ruled out bushes because they look old but intact. I have just had a thought , I couldnt move bar or hear clank when on level so dismissed it , thinking about it now could it actually be the bushes and that are finished and the only reason they appeared solid on the level is that the weight of the Landy was on them ?? , If we lift bonnet and put it on thd kerb again and rock it and the bushes are dead should we see the bar move it the bush mount ? , we were both on a night shift last night and it was dark and wet so I never thought about trying that !!
Thanks in advance as always

Check to see if the end of the ARB is hitting a strut. This can happen when the retaining rings on the bar corrode off, allowing the bar slide off centre to the subframe.

Great , ill ask him to look , would I be correct as described that this would cause the vibration and noise when being rocked whilst on kerb but not when on a flat surface ?

Thanks again

And on mine when I find the clip kit I bought from Aldi last year :D

I have considered making up some proper clamps that are in 2 halves, which then bolt together around the bar with small bolts. However as hose clips work and pass the MOT, there seems little point.
