ello fellow landish,
being new to the world of freelander i am in need of help.gotta td4 1999.
Started making major clunking noise,worse on lock&when slow,felt almost like driving over a breeze block,changed rear mounting bracket still same!
Now removed props&vcu ect,no clunk now but sounds like a train,clacketty clack,clacketty clack,any ideas folks?:confused:

I didn't think that the td4 was introduced until 2000. If you have a 1999 freelander diesel it will be an L-series.
Could be your IRD (front diff.) is broken. Is it blanked off? What does the oil in it look like?
 
This sounds like front outer CV joints. Why the noise is reduced when you removed the prop shaft is that the transmission is not wound-up by the torque which is necessarily induced by causing the VCU to slip.
 
cheerz for yer ideas gonna fit blanking plate & check oil weekend,if that doesn't work ill check cv nice one:D
