Cigarrete lighter

Hi there everyone,
I have been without a Land Rover for some time. In the past, I have owned many Series models, and a couple of Range Rovers.
Recently, I bought a 54 plate, 3 door, deisel, automatic SE. Very pleased so far.
The instuction book says that plugging in items other than the lighter can damage the electrical system. I only want to use low power items like mobile charger, or sat-nav.
Any comments or suggestions please. Whatever happened to the little sockets on the dash?

Plugging in a mobile/sat nav etc won't do any harm, they mean these little kettles etc that ya get now days..

Theres an auxiliary socket beside the drivers seat too.. if that helps.

Been using a phone charger and sat nav charger for over 3 yrs..havent blown it up yet...

tis bollocks, just a ploy to get you to buy "genuine land rover accessories" which are "tested and approved to ensure compatability with your vehicle"

low current items aren't the problem, is the higher drain items such as kettles and stuff (just don't do it). Also some rechargeable torches can cause problems if charged from the cigarette lighter socker, especially the big ones that contain a 12v sealed lead acid battery. When I had one of these on charge in an astravan, when you turned the engine off on the key, it kept running using power from the battery in the torch. Unplug the torch it stopped.

The additional socket is only on higher spec models, probabaly including the SE (I know it's not on my S).
It will handle a higher load that the cigarette's lighter. The figures are in the Handbook so you can work out what is safe.
I don't know if it's significant, but a cigarette lighter is only intended for a short term load.
Having said that, I've used mine for all sports of things with no apparent problems.
