Having bought the 97 Disco only 2 weesk ago I expexted some work to get it up to scratch with 100k on the clock.Having got my head around the sloppy gearshift problem with menbers help, I decided to take the Disco. into the lakes for a pleasure/business trip,I loaded yp with the missus and two dogs and hit the m6 near Carlisle on the slip road I held 3rd longer than usual to give the motor a bit of a clear out and notice a bit of white smoke in the mirror. All seemed well when I changed up tp 4th and 5th and I looked in the mirror to check (no smoke all ok).
After 30 miles we came off the m6 and down the slip for shap. I looked in the mirror and lots of white smoke behind. I looked at the motor temp and it was off the scale B***er.
I coasted to a halt and as we did the car filled with fumes which ponged a bit like curry (missus description).
Popping the bonnet revealed a jet of steam coming out of the broken water fillier /bleed cap on the thermostat housing.
ride home on back of AA truck refill with coolant after stripping thermo. housing to remove threads of broken plastic filler cap.
cannot get cap as dealers shut, start motor a brief rev brings coolant gushing out of filler and theres a contant screeching dry bearing somewhere on front of motor.
wether I have got away with the head gasket or not I cannot tell untill i get a filler cap.And the screeching could be serious if its anything to do with cam tensioner.

Motto dont leave home without toolls or vital fluids and a breakdown card. Will the Disco allow me to get it fully sorted before I reach the overdraught limit............?

hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if the smoke was coming out the exhaust then you almost certainly will have done the head gasket.....

Bad news bud.

In answer to your question .... not a hope. Phone the bank, arrange to have your wages paid direct to the parts dealer of your choice.
