Chasis rivnut fitting

Trying to fit side steps comes with M10 rivnuts to mount in p38 Chasis anyone know if there I'd a decent tool for fitting these things came with a proxy fitting tool that just doesn't work

10 mm bolt nut and washer. Screw nut onto bolt add washer. Screw bolt into rivnut. Place rivnut in hole, hold bolt head tighten nut.
 
Ha remember fitting these a few weeks ago .. Ok I looked at tools but carnt see how you would get it in really really tight ,so I got a long nut and bolt and two washers get the bolt wind on the nut followed by a washer then a metal ruler with the hole in the end or something as same but thin .. Next other washer followed by the riv nut wind it on to bolt end just sticks out Put the whole thing in the the chassis hole with one spanner wind the nut clock wise whilst holding the bolt end tight , now hopefully u have alloy riv nuts and bingo job done ,.. Took me a few times to get it right but all done and happy

What they said..........but use a high tensile bolt, not one made of cheese from B+Q;)
 
It came with a flat piece if metal with hole in it a bolt and nut like you suggest the bolt was short and didn't go through nut flat piece of metal and the rivnut the thread only goes 2/3 through rivnut and when you try winding the nut it's do stiff it's real hard to turn the nut and when the rivnut starts to crush it crushes too near the edge of Chasis and comes out or tightens but lopsided. Maybe I should buy some softer ones. Oh and to add to it I wound one in and after a few turns it seemed to get loose took tool off to check looked as if it was in Chasis so tested it with a bolt then as the bolt tightened in the rivnut started spinning in Chasis and had locked onto thread of bolt so now j have a bolt that's got the rivnut stuck to it that just spins in the Chasis can't get the bl**** thing out
 
Start again, as advised above, but with ally rivnuts. Sacrifice a couple experimenting off the car, tighten as far as you can with your fingers then count the number of turns required to tighten them correctly with a spanner. It works, my steps haven't fallen off yet.
 
Fitting Rivnuts without the special tool.
You need 2 nuts, 1 bolt and 1 washer that fit the thread of the rivnut. Put a clearance drill through 1 nut so that it has no thread and slides up and down the bolt.
Push the rivnut into the hole, wind the threaded nut and washer onto the bolt, then slide the drilled nut onto the bolt under them, then screw the bolt into the rivnut. It should go in far enough that the thread of the bolt is fully engaged with the thread of the rivnut. Tighten the threaded nut / washer down onto the drilled nut and wind it up tight, so that the bolt tries to pull the rivnut out of the hole, but it can't because the drilled nut is holding it in. The rivnut will then deform inside the hollow section as designed.
Loosen the threaded nut and test to see if the rivnut is tight - if not, wind it up a bit more.

Ask nicely and I could meet you with the correct tool-it does of course depend on your coffee making skills
 
Thanks for that the coffee is good but now I don't have enough components to do the job bank hol means need to wait to buy some more rivnuts

Alloy riv nuts are needed ebay a few quid you will bugger a few up but once you sus it its really easy and you will say god job happy chap now ,took me best part of a day but worth it ... I almost welded the things to me car ..lol
