Changing gear without a clutch

Hi all,

Now I know with bikes changing gear without the clutch is the norm, and often in lorries this is done to, to reduce clutch wear. Now the clutch in the landy will obviously be put under a lot of stress and consequently gain the most wear when its doing things like towing and certain situations off road where riding the clutch is used for accurate driving.

I was just wondering if changing gear without a clutch on normal day to day driving, when the revs are matched so no grinds come from the gear box, and smooth slow gear transition are used, when hammering your foot down isnt needed, is an ok way to reduce clutch wear without putting stress on other parts of the gear box.

Ive taught my self how to change gear smoothly without a clutch in the event of my clutch failing, but was just wondering if it could be done more often without any nasty side effects... seeing as bikes and lorries are set up to change gear in this way, and often only use their clutches for pulling away

On a bike its normal to ride without using the clutch when going up the gears but better to use the clutch when down shifting

LT77 gear box. Yea I know that but It can be done on the way down, just have to increase the speed of the engine to match the speed that the lower set of gears are turning at. Its difficult but can be done.

Racing car drivers using manual gearboxes use that in a double clutch pump type maneuver where they press the clutch down and slip it out of gear and into neutral, then increase the speed of the engine and press the clutch down again slipping it into the lower gear, thus there is no jerk from the rev change and the car isn't put off balance when entering a corner at speed

Not quite the same thing but the principle still stands

Oh really?? I thought a quick handbrake turn type maneuver around the corner on a bike was the norm

well i quite regullary forget to use the clutch seems ok,been doin it like that fer years.

i find it easier to hit corners at high speed and powerslide in the landy rather than try bike drift the back end.....u daft bikers gunna die u izz...

Dam, the only time I can get my landy to power slide is in the snow or in mud, the rest of the time it feels like its gonna flop over on its side so I don't tent to try

Will do daz expect much drifting now

Even on bikes changing without a clutch can have adverse effects, but less so than a car, as its different type of gear box.

I some times change down without the clutch on the bike, but only when I want to tit about, doesn't make for a smooth ride but it can be fun

So yes, over a long period damage does occur, or sometimes short periods depending on how go you are at changing without a clutch and the loads that are being transmitted. Same with a clutch, some people go through them yearly, some people make them last a life time.

Hummm okay, I will keep that in mind, perhaps do a bit of both to even out wear


Then again, I expect a new gear box is bit more pricy then new clutch lol

Never done anything that mechanical on me landy, Nothing that nasty has gone wrong with it since ive owned it. I'de like to think I ca do it, but might be a bit ambitions atm

well, now youv'e done it!!!

now lets think, £80 for a new clutch, or £1000 for a recon gearbox, let me see....
Im pretty sure I dont slip my clutch much when off road, just choose the right gear, then you dont need to.

wrong ,an ashcroft lt77 box is 445 quids and a clutch is at most 60 quids.

Not talking about off road, talking about relaxed casual driving on road. But now you've got the monies involved I am happy to put the wear on my clutch

See if I can fit a HGV box in me landy, then it will be good for upwards if a million miles without using the clutch

1 gear wonder lol....

fit ashcroft R380 200 tdi conversion box,that will do 250.000k easy
