Changing Engine Oil - How to?

Hello guys,

its been sometime since I have changed the engine oil and this time I want to do it myself so need your expert adivce!

I found an article online so can someone please first of all tell me the validity of this thing:

Can you recommend any engine oil (that can be obtained from say Halfords) and any special tips or (step by step) guide for doing this oil change?

Google 'Green Oval' - dowload the Rave disc (free) for your Freelander and you will find all things technical explained.

If you find the download a problem - copies of the discs are available on Ebay but check carefully what you are getting - latest (last available) versions are dated March 2003.

There are some tips on how to get the undertary off in earlier posts.
Reading the Rave and searching the forum will usually turn up a good set of info.:welcome2:

the rave cd is great but an oil change is hardly rocket science

and if he needs help with an oil change i reckon anything else should be left to a garage

A nuclear scientist aint born one ... learns over the years! No comparison... but with the way these LandRovers breakdown the sooner I start to learn to tinker with my car the better. So Nathan no need for such harsh words...

just trying to learn and getting advice from you fellas...

Castrol GTX 10w/40, Try Tesco,Asda or Wilkos as they are cheaper.

Its a PETROL

I know ..... thats y so many problems but I will take note of that much oil is spilled into a proper container!

I see Halfords do their 'own' make as well, them any good? Or shall I stick to 'branded' ones.

Agree with most of what your saying old bean, but if you think Nathans words are harsh then you're in for a treat on this forum.

Stop at 5.5 liter, then wait and check the level, if 5.5 is not enough you can still add. (This way works better than fill 6 liters (or more as the book says) and have to remove the extra).

Sorry, I thought it was a Td4 you were speaking about. (Thought by now everybody knew the only engine to buy is a Td4.....). Sorry don't know a bit about fluids on petrols.

Halfords is a rip-off.
Own-brands will be made to the specifications required, but a decent oil is worth the extra couple of quid.

L-series is simpler, easier to work on, more reliable, cheaper and British.

Just get yourself a Haynes Manual for reference and do it. Get that job under ya belt and start thinking what else to tackle. Hopefully in time your confidence and experience will grow and you'll be servicing it before you know it. Good luck mate.

Thanks for the inspiration! I did downloaded the Haynes manual yesterday and now looking forward to the weekend so as to start the ball rolling.
