Hi Folks. My 2.5petrol runs sweet and pulls well but the mpg is of course outrageous. Ive been offered an MOD overhauled 2.5 n/a from a mate whos just swapped his out for a TDi. He wants £200 for it but thats with rad, hoses etc, all things forward of the gearbox. Im not interested in power or speed but better economy would be ideal...

thanks

you wont gain that much economy but will get noise and sluggishness stick with petrol or 200tdi you can get them for £200 misout intercooler and use existing rad and get exhaust conversion from ebay

if its economy your after you'd be much better off with a 200TDi and leave off the turbo

because its a more ecomonical motor without......and before anyone starts ranting about the theory of turbos and how much more efficient etc i know and its true but in practice a N/A 200 pushing out around 85 bhp uses less fuel than a 112 bhp TDi.....

thats my experience anyway.I'm sure there's many others with different opinions

running with standard diffs and an overdrive........sit at 70 on the motorway happily enough and got a nice amount of low down grunt for towing.

Obviously nowhere near the acceleration of a TDi but thats where all the juice goes anyway and its much more free revving than a 19J.

Biggest downside is its loud....even compared to a 2 1/4 diesel

I've been toying with swapping my petrol lump for a 200TDi but if I assume the petrol does 18 to 20 mpg and the diesel will do around 26mpg (I know people say 30 but realistically with an old TDi it's going to be lower) then I save about 3.8p per mile at the current diesel/petrol prices.

So if I spnd £1K on the swap it takes over 26,000 miles to pay back; at £1.5K it takes 40,000 miles. As these swaps always work out more expensive than estimated, it's gonna be near £1K or a bit more. As my mileage is less than 10,000 pa I'm thinking about keeping the cash in the bank and running the petrol motor as it is a nice smooth engine, it's less hassle and it's really cheap and easy to work on.

I'm then going to upgrade to a newer LR (prob 90) in about 4 years when my circumstances change and I can use it as my main motor.

I appreciate the TDi is more powerful/nicer but if you're looking at running it with no turbo or a n/a diesel, I don't think it's worth swapping it - especially in economy terms. A nicely tuned 2.5L petrol engine is not great, but is fine and motors along with traffic fine, and I've towed some pretty heavy stuff with this motor with little problem.:clap2:

With no turbo but with an overdrive in my 88", I get just over 30mpg and have peaked at 35mpg. 200 Di.

But the resale would be much more for the vehicle and more appeal to potential buyers:D
