Hi guys -

I know that the carb on my son's 1979 2 1/4 series 3 is knackered. I have the idea in my head that there were more than one type that may have been fitted.

Is this correct or am I confused.com? How would I tell them apart if there were more than one.

I know these are dim questions but what the hell.... I always ask dim questions!:confused:

identity on the carbs is pretty easy

theres not much difference in the shapes between zenith and solex carbs

the easier way to identify them is looking at it from the passengers side wing on the right hand side on the lower side there will be the makers name cast into the side of the carb with either solex or zenith the model number will be stamped directly below the makers name

webber also do a carb for the series petrol but theyre totaly different larger in size and will have their makers name and model number on the top of the float chamber houseing and a number of rubber breather hoses here and there

zenith and solex are thinner abbout the size of a baked bean tin and a webber is shaped more like a sponge pudding tin

the parts on the carbs arew not interchangeable to each other such as solex carb jets wont fit and work propperly in a zenith but both the solex and zenith will fit straight onto the series petrol inlet manifold but the webber needs an adaptor plate either purchaseing or if yer brave enough makeing

if you can find one a common conversion people used toi do was retrofit a carb off an old granada or cortina later i believe they even used to fit escort carbs to them as they were all webber aswell :D:D

That's great! mind you i bet those old carbs are well expensive nowadays.... I used to ghave an old granada not so long ago anorl.... bugger!

its only 12 months ago i gave 5 caqrbs for cortinas to the friggin scrap man by accident they were in a cardboard box with all the old chopped up looms of allsorts of cars i had over the years :eek:

Weber 34ICH's come up fairly regular on ebay for varying prices...there are a few on there now. I'm not too hot on carbs but the Webers are a piece of **** to recondition as the recon kits are cheap and comes with all the bits you need. Plus in a Weber there are not many moving parts (just throttle and choke) to worry about.

Somebody used to do a conversion elbow/kit for an SU a mate of mine fitted one on his 2A it ran nice and was slightly more economical and the latter 2.5 petrol had a twin choke webber, the manifold would fit the head ok but I don't know about the exhaust not having done the swap myself, you may be able to fit the 2 1/4 ex manifold and keep your down pipe.

looks like i am keeping my eyes open for the time being then.... could do with geting one soon though. I really want to hear the engine running in the series before we take itout of the chassis
