After replacing the oil cooler on my td4 I'm still getting oil in the coolant header tank. I know this could be the remains of what's left in the pipes. I'm just hopinf it is and not sonething else.
So I wondering, as radiator flush and even dishwasher powder is not shifting it, I'm wondering if I can use anything stronger, much stronger, ie garb cleaner which shifts oil with ease. Say if I bought 5 litres of the stuff and filled coolant system with it do you fink that will work?

Small amounts of oil floating on top?

If so i would just clamp the res hoses and remove the res every few months , clean it out , refit it. Its like a 5-10 minute job and it should slowly completely clean the system.

If it continues over a few clean-outs i'd start to investigate, but i wouldnt chase a fault when perhaps there isnt one.

Flushing harsh materials through your coolant system just screams 'bad idea' to me. Reguardless, i believe Land Rover specify Persil Non-biological as the correct coolant system flush :p

Yeah, Land Rover said Persil, but that was mainly for headgasket failure repairs.

I personally dislike the idea and i tend to chuck a hosepipe into the res hose and disconnect the other side and leave it running through.

But with your case i'd just clean the header out every now and then.

I've had this problem in the past.

The trouble with using most normal detergents is that they froth. Persil or Daz is going to make a bubbly mess and need lots of flushing out after.

I flushed the rad out to get it as clean as I could then poured in the whole bottle of Lidl's Multi Purpose Cleaner. (the one in the orange spray bottle)

I use it for all de-greasing jobs including the EGR and even for me hands after, so it's not super harsh. Dries the hands up a bit though.

I left it for a couple of days then flushed out and refilled with the usual OAT red antifreeze.

I used cheapo dishwasher tabs in mine and it flushed it out a treat. Kind to all the rubber and metal in the system too.

ok i will try.

supose i do it and it cleans out well but just keeps coming back, what could be causing it? i know head gasket is one (im pretty sure there is no hgf as its running sweet with no other symptoms). Just changed oil cooler as that was the prime suspect. maybe there is just so much of it in there, only had car for 4 months or so and dont know how long it could of been like it. anyhow, is there another part on the td4 that can fail causing oil to leak into coolant?

The M47R has 3 water cooled heat exchangers, that most vehicles don't have, plus the fbh. I would discount the fbh.

The EGR exhaust inlet -I think an unlikely source of your problem.

Auto g/box oil-cooler. Possible if you have an auto

Oil filter / oil pump housing. This is a strange piece of kit I do not fully understand.

Check this interesting site:

The thing is ;

The FBH would put Diesel into the coolant system if it was faulty, ive seen it before. When you remove the cap it stinks of fuel, but obviously it wouldnt look like oil.

The Autobox oil is bright red (depending on how many miles the oil has done), would be easy to tell it from Engine oil.

The EGR Cooler would surely cause coolant loss and alot of smoking, but doesnt interact with the oil.

And with the oil pump, erm... you've got me there. Surely not possible?

ok so what i did i took my old oil cooler and pured water in the inlet pipe, water came out 1 of the 3 holes on the other side, fine i guess, then a few seconds later it started oozing from another hole carrying left over oil with it. Culprit?

NEVER use dishwasher powder. It can clog heater and coolant matrices and fine waterways. Always use dishwasher liquid! It mixes easier and won't clog.

I just need something super strong

When I had this problem on a Saaband the oil still appeared in the coolant tank after replacing all the hoses, I used to skim the oil off the top of the coolant in the header tank. Gradually I was skimming less off and less frequently. I cannot recall how long it took to completely go, probably a few months. The initial problem was auto fluid mixing with coolant in the Saab radiator which was faulty.

ive done a flush today, another one of many to come.
During the process i used unleaded petrol to clean out the header tank and worked fantasticly, as i poured it in it just picked up the oil and held it, and when i tipped it out, the bottle was spotless, no scrubbing needed, a quick swirl and a wipe to absorb the excess then a rinse, the best ive ever seen it, whereas before i would just scrub scrub scrub shake shake shake and would still be filthy.
Anyway.
so, now for the stupid question.
would i be a **** in flushing coolant system with unleaded, even if its a quick pour it in and straight back out, no engine starting, atleast i know that as it comes out the bottom it bring the oil with it, then a proper flush with water and rad flush.

Don't like the idea of unleaded and what it might do. If you have cured the fault why not be patient, a small amount of oil floating about wont do any damage.
