Can you swap ECU's

Reading various threads there seems to be a mixed opinion on ECU replacement.

Can I take a another 110 (X reg) ecu and stick it into my 110 (W reg) to see if it runs without having to reprogram any of the ECU?

You can try,it will just fire a few times and die.It needs to have a security synch via Testbook or similar to make it work.If you swopped both engine AND alarm ecu over you would be fine,except for needing to change injector codes.But no harm would come if they were not changed.
What is the actual problem ?

Ok so it may be worth a go.

Whats wrong - I have a another post at the moment about the car turns over but won't start.
