A question that has been puzzling me....

I have seen Van tyres in 195 80 R15 fitment - Are these safe to use on a freelander with 15" alloys??

I can see that they will be almost useless on mud / wet grass, but looking for excellent life on road. My builder friends have done 60 or 70,000 miles on their Transit originals and still have rubber left.

Any reasons why this should not work??

If they fit then I can't see why it would be a problem. As long as all 4 are the same, and you stay on the tarmac. Might even reduce cabin noise, not that its much of an issue on Freelanders anyway.

I would have thought as long as the load and speed ratings are also ok don't see why not. Best to ask a tyre fitter

Van tyres are a whole lot better these days than they used to be, and with reinforced sidewalls on many brands, well worth looking at.

Our Renault Trafic LWB vans have got Goodyears on them, and they are excellent tyres, we have also had Conti's on in the past. We have Pirelli Scorpions on our Disco 2.

The only caveat is not to use remoulds, but you probably already know that ;)

harder side walls, if we can throw a hi top iveco round the roads a gaylander will be no issue, the wear rate should be better too

My Colways have lasted well, I have covered 4,000 miles and only worn 1mm off the tread. A set in 255/55 R18 lasted me 32,000 miles and these were only £50 per tyre!!

Thanks for your advice - when the are worn (prob 3 years or more) then I might just try some van ones.

With stiffer sidewalls designed for load lugging you might find the ride a bit harsher. Also being designed to last for higher mileages will mean that the compound will be harder & less grippy, but as long as you're not on the limit going round every corner you probably wouldn't notice. All in all probably a good sound economy move.
