can I run with no ac belt

Hi could anyone tell me it I can run my L322 with no ac belt . The bearing on the front of the compressor is on its way out and whilst I am trying to either source a new bearing or another compressor I was think to remove the belt before the bearing lets go , probably at the most inopportune moment. I didn't want to just try it in case it sets off a load of warning lights etc.
