My wife has always wanted to drive a Land Rover Defender SWB (preferably a
shiny raspberry one!). I have been trying to find somewhere in or near
Hertfordshire where I can hire one for a weekend for her birthday (we live
near Watford). Does anyone know where I might be successful? Many thanks
in advance.

Why not take her to a well run site for a day and have some good
quality instruction? I feel confident in recommending Lee James (up
the A1, turn left at Newark into Sherwood Forest) who has a Defender
fairly close to rasberry pink (a 110 though as he trains utility
drivers).

If you explain your wife' cravings he will do a session from one hour
to a full day that should ensure her full satisfaction . . .

That way she gets to mount the creature in its proper habitat so to
speak!

You can get his phone number from the BORDA website (www.borda.org.uk).
I can vouch for the quality of his training as I have often observed
him in action.

Regret we only have Discoveries nowadays so cant offer myself . . .

Regards, Lurch

I've spent a 2 hour session with Lee James - very good too.
It was fun and I learned a lot. I drove a Td5 90.

Just one other thought, you could try SHB 4x4 hire
http://www.shb.co.uk/ . They hire out Defenders to
construction sites, but also to individuals. I think last
time I asked it was about £80 for the day.

My defender was an ex-SHB hire vehicle, I was going to suggest them as
well but I forgot the name of the company! It was in good nick
despite being a hire car, very revvy engine (for a 300TDi) but the
gearbox died within 2 months of me getting it, thankfully I had a 3
month warranty from the dealer.

Note that their defenders are likely to be hard-top commercials, so no
soundproofing, carpets, trim, stereo etc, about as raw as a
factory-spec defender can get.

Many thanks guys. I've got the hire rates from SHB 4x4 hire so my wife will
probably get her wish. (Well, this one at least!)

Just a suggestion, buy her a day at an off-road school (which uses
Defenders obviously) then she can really go to town.

She doesn't want to drive off road - she's been off road with me in my Jeep
Wrangler and enjoyed it but worries about bumping into a tree and damaging
something. She just wants to drive a Land Rover on the road!

We will look out for a posting along the lines of "Wranger for sale -
genuine reason - wife wants a 90" ;-)
