Hi all, someone may remember in a previous post of mine I was wondering about the rattle coming from my engine, and it was sort of narrowed down to the vac pump.
After listening to it closely for a while I decided to source a replacement from a Landy breaker on eBay.
It's a second hand genuine wabco pump in good nick and I fitted it yesterday - what a bloody fiddle job, compared to how simple it looks..
The old pump came off and the gasket was shredded, then I cursed my stupidity for not ordering a new gasket at the same time, so I fitted he replacement with a big bead of red gasket paste as a temporary measure... (Must order a gasket shortly)
Anyhoo, the reason the old vac pump was so noisy is because the mating surfaces of the plunger and the cam lobe were very rough - I'll put a pic on later. The new one is fine, but I expect it's going to get somewhat shredded by the rough cam lobe over time, but the question is how much time?
Am I looking at a replacement cam, or is the remedy out of proportion to the problem?
I know it's something that ideally should be done, but it's a relatively big job.
In the meantime I'll throw in some more zx1 to ease the friction and give the vac pump plunger a little protection and then when I pull it off to fit the new gasket I can see what sort of wear the cam is causing to it.
