Well iv picked up my first disco and my 1st diesle, now the guy i bought it from tells me that it was done about 7k ago, but im not a very trusting person especially with no paper work to back it up so im going to do it myself, just want to know if the following is all i would need to do it (and if they will be ok)

Im quite handy with a spanner so shouldnt have any issues.

Kit
DISCOVERY& DEFENDER 300TDI CAMBELT MODIFIED KIT 1995 0N | eBay

tool
Land Rover Discovery 200 300 2.5 TDI EDC Manual Engine Timing Locking Tool Kit | eBay

would the above do, can they be found cheaper? or any body in leeds/wakefield are that could loan me the tool to do the job? and poss some spare hands

thanks

Paul

wouldnt bother with the timing tool kit, you can get away with a 9.5mm drill bit and a 6mm drill bit. theres plenty of descriptions on here on how to do it, only problems you might have is removing the crankshaft nut and pulley.
i have a homemade puller and locking tool if needed, but i need to get to know yer first!
(also have decent homemade timing pins too, but drill bits are readily available)
send us a pm if your over shipley direction at any time.

Hi Paul,
I agree with you, its to much of a chance to trust that it has been done as it will wreck your engine if it fails! It is a pain in the backside to do, but not difficult with the right tools. I did my first change for the same reason when I bought my Disco.

I would advise that you change the water pump and the gasket behind the water pump housing between the housing and block at the same time as this is a pain to do normally and a common failure in my experience. Make sure the gasket is the latest type (metal) and use a good quality gasket sealant not silicone.

( I always use Hylomar (Universal blue) for sealing gaskets, or metal to metal sealing, this is a non setting compound that can be used for oil or water, originally manufactured for jet engine use. Its about 9 pounds a tube but goes a long way! You will have plenty of need for it on a Landy)

You do not really need the locking pins as you can use a drill bit to lock the diesel pump, but you have to get the crank in the right position as well!
The other tool you will need that is not provided in the list, is a tool to hold the crank still whilst you undo or tighten the crank pulley bolt if you have an auto box. Do not use the locking tool as this could shear off.

One other tool is a thin flat spanner (32mm) to fit the fan retaining nut and it is left hand thread, do this first before removing the belts. Just whack the spanner with a hammer to break the seal it will then just undo by hand.
